Our mission is to ensure that the history of Smithtown Township and our Long Island heritage is restored, preserved and interpreted for the education and enjoyment of current and future generations. We seek to strengthen the ties to our rich local heritage.
This mission is carried out through collection, conservation and preservation, research, exhibitions, publications, educational programs, support of regional heritage organizations, living history events, community library and archives. We actively promote the importance of history and preservation, and maintain six houses and eight outbuildings at three locations: Obadiah Smith House, Caleb Smith House, and the 20-acre historic Village of the Branch site.
Our programs are supported through dues, tax-deductible gifts of members, friends, and neighbors as well as by grants from private foundations, and state and local governments. We count on support of all who share our concerns for the preservation of the past.
Membership is open to all. We depend upon a dedicated group of volunteers to assist the professional staff in managing special events and programs. The participation of our members helps to increase the historical awareness so necessary in dealing with a complex modern world.
